I get this question often. Let me show you a quick trick if you find yourself with a leaky water heater.
If you see water on the floor near your water heater...
First, find the cold water line and turn it off.
Next, turn Gas valve down to pilot light or vacation.
Attach a hose to the drain on the unit, in order to drain the water heater and stop further leaking.
Make sure your hose end is draining into a sink, sump pump, or floor drain.
Turn unit drain on manually or with a screw driver depending on the unit requirements.
Sometimes you may also need to open the temperature & pressure valve before the water will begin to flow.
Finally, Call Crossroads Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning to have your unit repaired or replaced right away: 201.384.3063.
