"What do I do if my water heater is leaking?"

I get this question often. Let me show you a quick trick if you find yourself with a leaky water heater.

If you see water on the floor near your water heater...

  • First, find the cold water line and turn it off.

  • Next, turn Gas valve down to pilot light or vacation.

  • Attach a hose to the drain on the unit, in order to drain the water heater and stop further leaking.

    • Make sure your hose end is draining into a sink, sump pump, or floor drain.

  • Turn unit drain on manually or with a screw driver depending on the unit requirements.

    • Sometimes you may also need to open the temperature & pressure valve before the water will begin to flow.

  • Finally, Call Crossroads Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning to have your unit repaired or replaced right away: 201.384.3063.

While many things like this can be done by a homeowner with basic knowledge of plumbing fixtures, when in doubt, we always recommend calling a licensed master plumber to help with serious plumbing issues.)
